Godfrey
Douglas Godfrey (B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering,
U of Utah, 1942) began his lifelong career in Tribology at the NASA
laboratory in Cleveland, Ohio in 1944, after a year in the US Air
Force. At NASA he developed methods for the bonding, and measured
the friction and wear properties of solid lubricants, now used in
space applications, and conducted fundamental investigations on fretting
corrosion and other wear mechanisms. In 1955 Mr. Godfrey joined Chevron
Research Company, where for 28+ years he conducted research on the
fundamentals of Tribology, especially boundary lubrication. He became
Chevron Corporation's in-house consultant on the diagnosis of wear
problems and their solution. At retirement in 1983 his position was
Senior Engineering Associate.
Mr. Godfrey has written 53 papers and articles on Tribology, and given
numerous talks. He is a Life-Member and Fellow of the Society of Tribologists
and Lubrication Engineers who have honored him with several awards.
He served as a director of the Northern California section in 1989-91.
Currently, he is editor of a series of articles called "Back
to Basics" for the publication "Lubrication Engineering".
Since retirement from Chevron, Mr. Godfrey has continued working as
a consultant on tribology as "Wear Analysis", a one man,
home office, operation. Major clients have been the USA Corps of Engineers,
P.G. and E., Kaiser Aluminum, Western Digital Computers, Southern
Pacific and H.R. Textron.
Also in retirement, Mr. Godfrey has served as Adjunct Professor at
San Francisco State University, where he supervised research projects
for senior mechanical engineers for 11 years. Mr. Godfrey also gives
guest lectures on Tribology and machine design to students at SFSU,
and at the University of California at Berkeley.
Mr. Godfrey is currently a Research Associate for Herguth Laboratories,
Inc., where he is developing a failure analysis of lubricated components
service.
