Test Results Comparison Images

NOTE: Diesel fuel with much more than 25 ppm sulfur or heavy contamination change from PASS (bright, clear purple) to brown, yellow and even clear almost instantly upon shaking. In these cases there is not need to wait for the 15 minutes.

PASS:  Samples that PASS are clear and a bright purple color after 15 minutes of reaction with solution.

Comments:  These diesel fuels are pure Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) and are free of excessive and harmful contamination.

FAIL:  Samples that FAIL the test are discolored, ranging from light red/brown to very brown and in severe cases clear to yellow.  They are NOT clear, bright purple color after 15 minutes of reaction with solution.

Comments:  These diesel fuels contain higher than acceptable levels of sulfur and/or are contaminated with gasoline, chemicals or excessive levels of harmful hydroperoxides.

Data Table for Above Graph

Note:  5 ppm did not change color and was stopped at 90 minutes in all cases. 100 ppm changes immediately after shaking.

TEST METHOD SUMMARY

  • Open the test vial labeled “Solution A”.
  • Add 3 ml of diesel fuel using the supplied pipet, shake for ~15 seconds.
  • Add capsule “ B” cap and shake by hand for 1 full minute.
  • Wait 15 minutes and compare test sample color to the color photos supplied with the test kit.

Test Results Discussion: If the tests results are at the 13 ppm level or lower you can be confident that the fuel you have tested is free of harmful sulfur, hydroperoxides, gasoline or other chemicals not found in ULSD. If your test results indicate more sulfur than the 13 ppm rating the fuel is suspected of (1) containing higher levels of sulfur than legal for ULSD, (2) being unstable (having a high level of hydroperoxides), and/or (3) being contaminated with gasoline, poor quality biodiesel or other chemicals not found in typical ULSD.

High quality, low sulfur fuel shows approximately the same purple color as the 5 ppm and 13 ppm reference samples shown above, after 15 minutes of reaction time. As the contamination in the fuel increases, the color changes to a red-brown to brown to color. Severe contamination will show a much more rapid and dramatic change.  100 ppm is brown after shaking for 1 minute.

The Diesel-Check test is a fuel screening test designed for use in the field.  When negative or poor quality test results are indicated, a sample should be sent to an appropriate laboratory for analysis to determine the cause of the negative test results.  Due to variables outside of our control the Diesel-Checksm screening test may not always provide accurate test results.  Herguth Technologies, Inc., is not liable for any damage caused by inaccurate test results.

Herguth Technologies Inc. makes every effort to provide a high quality test kit.  However, in the case of inaccurate test results as a result of test kit quality, Herguth Technologies, Inc., will provide a replacement Diesel-Checksm test kit.  To receive a replacement test kit, send your used test kit and an explanation of the problem to Herguth Technologies Inc. at the address listed below.  Please allow 1 business day for shipment.

More About  Diesel-Check

Diesel-Check is an inexpensive 15 minute test that measures high sulfur levels in ULSD, harmful contamination from gasoline, hydroperoxides or other chemicals that may damage an engine.

The test is extremely simple, takes only minutes, and is known to detect excessive sulfur levels in ULSD along with hydroperoxides gasoline and other chemical not found in ULSD.  For more precise test results and to pinpoint the precise problem we recommend Herguth Technologies Inc. laboratory analysis.

The diesel fuel test kit comes with scientifically developed, patent pending reagents (A & B).  These are mixed together with the diesel fuel sample.  These reagents react with the diesel fuel and rapidly change color when high sulfur fuel or excessive hydroperoxides are present.  Over time even good diesel fuel slowly reacts with these reagents to cause color changes.  So, making the observations at the predetermined 15 minute time interval is critical to the accuracy of the test results.

The test can be performed by simply comparing the color of the test solutions 15 minutes after mixing to the color chart provided with the kit.  Lower detection limits can be achieved using Herguth Technologies Inc. laboratory analysis.

 How Does It Work?

Diesel fuel is comprised of a complex matrix of various components.  A variety of sulfur species, aromatics, hydroperoxides and phenols coexist in diesel fuel(1).  The refining processes used for ULSD not only remove sulfur, but many of the other constituents found in higher sulfur diesel fuels. By definition(2) high sulfur fuels contain 500 ppm or less (S500) of sulfur; however they are normally in the range of 300-400 ppm or less.  ULSD is by definition 15 ppm of sulfur (S15) or less and are often in the 9 ppm or less range.

The ULSD diesel fuel test protocol takes advantage of these unique characteristics by selectively measuring the unique attributes of the ULSD as compared to poor quality, contaminated and/or higher sulfur diesel fuels.

Scientifically developed, patent pending and compared to strict American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) sulfur testing protocols this test method puts you in charge ….. in the field …. in minutes.

Compared to laboratory based sulfur and quality tests that can take days and cost hundreds of dollars this test is done on-site, inexpensively and in minutes.  This test will give you the assurance   you need in complying with EPA regulations(3) or damage engines due to poor fuel.

Diesel -Check kits are packaged 10 tests to a box with 2 empty sample vials for shipping urgent samples to the laboratory.
