The scales at the left of the estimated percentage are used to help characterize the concentration.  If the sample becomes clear in the middle of the scale it is most likely close the representative value.  If the sample become clear on either end of the scale is most likely higher or lower than the indicated representative percent value.

Example:  This fuel is clear when it was added to the lower portion of the test marker for 10% or more.  This indicates it is most likely higher than 10% since it is in the lower portion of the marker.  But, since we added fuel in a stepwise manner in the 20% range and it did not turn clear we know the sample is 10% but not more than 20%.

If it were in the middle it would be nearer 10%, if it were in the upper portion

the marker it would indicate it might be slightly less than 10%

Recommendation:  To test and unknown fuel sample start by adding fuel to the lower potion of the 20% marker.  If it is clear stop.  If not add fuel to the middle and so on….  This will help “bracket” level of biodiesel present.

Instructions:

Step 1

  • Add diesel fuel sample to the test vial up to the lower portion of the 20% or more range.
  • Shake for 10 seconds and let stand for 10 seconds.
  • If the sample is clear (not cloudy or hazy) the test is done the sample is a least 20% biodiesel or more.
  • If the sample is not clear, but is cloudy or hazy continue with Step 2.

Step 2

  • Add diesel fuel sample to the test vial up to the center portion of the 20% or more range.
  • Shake for 10 seconds and let stand for 10 seconds.
  • If the sample is clear (not cloudy or hazy) the test is done the sample is a least 20% biodiesel or more.
  • If the sample is not clear but is cloudy or hazy continue with Step 3.

Step 3

  • Add diesel fuel sample to the test vial up to the top portion of the 20% or more range.
  • Shake for 10 seconds and let stand for 10 seconds.
  • If the sample is clear (not cloudy or hazy) the test is done the sample is a least 20% biodiesel or more.
  • If the sample is not clear but is cloudy or hazy continue with Step 4.

Step 4

Continue adding fuel to the vial up to the remaining markers bottom, middle and top.
