Tribology Studies / Wear Testing

Pin-on-Disk Testing
Our Pin-on-Disk apparatus conforms to ASTM G99-95a for measurement of wear and includes kinetic friction measurements. Measurements can be done with or without lubrication. Variables besides load, speed and temperature include wear specimen composition and geometry (pin and/or disk). Coefficient of friction and wear scar severity allow the direct comparison of one lubricant to another.

Fretting Corrosion / Fretting Wear Testing
Fretting corrosion or fretting wear of surfaces in vibratory contact can be measured using this unique test apparatus. Comparison of a lubricant's (grease or oil) fretting resistance performance can be quantified quickly and economically. Our experience shows that less than 30 seconds is required to generate a fretting corrosion site on a cleaned steel friction pair that could be mistaken for a rust!

Hydrodynamic Oil Film Failure
A low-voltage electrical circuit is used to detect oil film failures in journal bearings due to high loads or temperatures. This unique arrangement can simulate the operation of tilted pad bearings, such as are found in hydroelectric turbines, coolant pumps and thrust bearings.

Rolling Element Bearing Torque Tester
The rolling element bearing torque tester is unique and measures bearing rolling torque. It allows for the direct comparison of bearings or lubricants used in bearings. Maximum bearing size is 100 mm (4 in) OD.

Pad-on-Disk Testing
Friction and wear of Pad-on-Disk simulates situations found in low-speed heavily-loaded trunnions or journals in dams or bridges. Static (break-away) friction and low-speed (i.e. 0.2 in/min) kinetic friction are measured. The apparatus is used to optimize grease and material combinations.
